I have to say that one of the most common questions that I get as a brand photographer is my clients wondering what they should wear to their brand photoshoot. 

Figuring out what to wear for your brand photoshoot might feel like just another thing you have to add to your already never-ending to-do list but that’s why I’m glad you found me. 

This guide gives you everything you need to know about how to plan your brand photoshoot outfits so you don’t have to keep wondering what you’re going to wear and so that you can choose the right outfits that authentically reflect your brand identity and brand story – which is the goal! 

Let’s dive in… 

Understanding Your Brand and Your Vibe

The first step to planning your brand outfits is taking a moment to define your brand. 

If you struggle with this, don’t worry here’s an easy exercise you can do to help you start to define your brand. 

Remember, lots of business owners struggle with their branding – so if you’re in the same boat that’s totally okay. 

Grab a pen and paper and write down the answers to these questions – 

  1. Who do you want to serve and who benefits the most from your products or services? 
  2. Describe your ideal client – fill in as many details as possible!
  3. What makes your brand unique? How does it stand out in your industry and from your competitors? 
  4. If your brand was a person how would you describe yourself? 

The last step, create a mood board (you can use Pinterest to do this). As you create this board make sure that it has your brand colors and also pictures that reflect your brand and your vision. 

Now take everything from above and what I want you to do next is to figure out your brand vibe. 

Ask yourself is my brand creative? Minimalist? Bold? Loud? Professional? Something else? Make sure to take note of whatever adjectives you choose. 

Figuring out what your brand vibe is will also make it much easier to decide which outfits you’re going to select for your photoshoot. 

Now that you know what your brand vibe is and have defined your brand you’re ready to move onto the next steps. 

Plan Multiple Outfits 

If you’re someone who struggles with deciding what to wear – the great news about your brand photoshoot is that you can wear multiple outfits! 

However, let me preface this by saying you need to discuss with your brand photographer prior to how many outfit changes you’re permitted to have. Every photographer is going to have different options or number of outfits they may allow. 

 In a branding photoshoot with me, I don’t actually have a set number of outfits. You can change as much as you want and I’ll even help you plan out your outfits and give you suggestions on how to add layers or different accessories to create multiple looks. 

I would also suggest bringing more outfits than you think you’ll need. Most of my clients will typically changed 3-6 times throughout the session.

If you’re able to use multiple outfits in your branding photoshoot I’d encourage you to bring at least two outfits – bring more if you’re able because each outfit can convey something different and unique about your brand!

For example, if your brand vibe is loud and bold perhaps you’d like for one outfit to demonstrate energy and excitement and have a mix of vibrant colors, whereas your other outfit could convey confidence and authority with darker clothing. Both of these outfits still showcase your brand but these different outfits will show different aspects of your brand to give variety to your photos! 

Remember, the outfits that you choose don’t have to look the same – what’s most important is that with whatever outfits you choose you feel confident and that your outfits reflect your brand identity and vibe. 

The goal is to make your brand photos stand out from everyone else online because they are created from something no one else can replicate…YOU! 

Creating Layers

The next thing I wanted to mention as you’re choosing your brand outfits is to think about layers. 

Layers can add so much versatility to your outfits and can easily switch up an outfit quickly so again your photos don’t all look the same. Think about some ways you can change up your look with layers – in some photos can you add in a blazer? How about a scarf? Maybe a cute, stylish hat? 

Adding a cute hat to some photos or a different fun accessory without changing the base outfit will add depth to your branding photos and is also another great way to express another part of your brand identity and personality! 

Complimenting Your Brand’s Color Palette

This is a step that could easily be looked over but as you’re in the process of planning your outfits consider how you can implement your brand’s own color palette into the clothes you choose! 

If you don’t already have clothing that matches your brand’s color palette this doesn’t mean you have to go and spend a bunch of money on a brand new wardrobe. 

What you can do instead is try to find similar colors that would fit within your brand’s color palette. Remember, ideally we want your brand photos to show as much of your brand as possible and one part of this is color. 

Make sure that as you choose outfits that go with your brand’s color palette to be mindful if any colors clash or don’t go well together. I want each outfit you pick to be intentional about enhancing your brand’s identity – not distracting from it. 

Avoiding Distractions

As you select your outfits and also follow this guide the last thing I want you to pay attention to is if any of your clothing has another brand’s logo or is super distracting. Your outfits shouldn’t take away from the main subject of the photo aka you. 

I would encourage you to avoid excessive accessories, mismatched patterns, colors that don’t pair well with each other, or clothing with another brand featured. 

If you’re still staring at your closet feeling at a loss as to what to wear another tip you can try is looking at other brand photoshoots with brands that inspire you. You can also look at brand photoshoot inspiration on Pinterest so that you can have a better idea of how you’re going to build your own brand outfits. 

Your outfits don’t have to be overly complex and just remember to keep the focus on you and your brand. Simplicity and cohesion can be the best way to plan your outfits.
